How Does Virtual IOP Work?

When you are struggling with addiction or a mental health disorder, you need proper treatment. However, keeping up with your sessions can be difficult, especially if the treatment facility is far away or you do not have reliable transportation. It can also be challenging to attend treatment sessions if you work a full-time job or care for a loved one during the day. A virtual intensive outpatient program (VIOP) can make getting help more accessible and affordable.

At Promises Brazos Valley, we aim to make getting addiction treatment as painless as possible so that nothing stands in the way of your recovery. Our online addiction treatment program allows you to navigate the recovery process from the comfort and convenience of home. Contact us today at (979) 731-9433 to enroll in our virtual IOP.

What Is a Virtual IOP?

A virtual IOP, or virtual intensive outpatient program, brings the elements of an addiction treatment program to you through phone or video chat. Many treatment facilities began to offer virtual IOP programs in response to the pandemic and found that the benefits of these programs were too invaluable to discontinue afterward. A virtual IOP offers enhanced:

  • Convenience
  • Accessibility
  • Effectiveness
  • Client retention
  • Relapse prevention

By allowing clients to receive addiction treatment virtually, treatment centers make recovery possible for many people who may otherwise not seek help.

How Does a Virtual IOP Program Work?

A virtual IOP works similarly to an in-person IOP, except that your treatment sessions are conducted online or by phone. Here is an idea of what you can expect from a virtual IOP:

A Virtual Intake Assessment

You will schedule a video chat or phone call with a physician who will take your health history and ask questions about your mental health and substance use history.

Development of a Treatment Plan

Your care team will review the results of your intake assessment and discuss the appropriate treatment plan.

Medication Management

If your treatment includes medication for withdrawal management or mental health disorders, your team will send your prescriptions electronically to your local pharmacy. In some cases, they may even be able to have your medication delivered to your home.

Teletherapy

You will receive individual, group, and family therapy via video chat. Your sessions will be scheduled similarly to in-person sessions, meaning approximately three to five days a week for several hours a day. Since you will not need to commute to the treatment center, you save time and money on travel.

Support

Although you are not visiting the treatment facility for your sessions, you can still access around-the-clock support from your treatment team. Most virtual IOPs provide access to support through live chat or phone calls to help keep you on track. Some treatment centers may also connect you with local support groups to further assist you on your recovery journey.

Since your treatment sessions will be conducted virtually, it is essential to communicate with your treatment team about any symptoms you have. In doing so, they can address them quickly. This is especially crucial during the early stages of withdrawal, when you are most vulnerable to relapse. Unlike an in-person program, particularly an inpatient program, you do not have staff by your side at all times to administer medications immediately to maintain your comfort. If you have any discomfort at all, it is vital that you reach out to your team immediately for guidance.
