What is an aftercare program?

An aftercare program, also known as an alumni or extended care program, provides recovery support long after you complete an addiction treatment program.

Do you need an aftercare program for recovery?

Enrolling in addiction treatment is one of the best things you can do to quit using drugs or alcohol for good. But recovery often does not end there. You need to continually renew your commitment to staying sober, which can be challenging if you do not have adequate support. You may benefit from an aftercare program if:

Your home is not necessarily supportive of recovery. This may be the case if there are strained relationships in the household or your family members or roommates still participate in drug or alcohol use.
Your social circle still revolves around alcohol or drugs. While you cannot control the activities of others around you, you may also find it difficult to avoid spending time with friends when they are using substances, primarily if that used to be the primary focus of your get-togethers.
